October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Whether you’re at home, at work or on the move, here are four tips that can help you protect yourself and your personal information online.
Use strong passwords
Avoid using the same password for all your online accounts. Longer passwords are also preferred. The U.S. Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency recommends making your passwords at least 16 characters long. If you have trouble keeping track of each of your unique passwords, try using a password manager that stores your passwords and fills them in automatically.
Use multi-factor authentication
Use MFA anywhere it’s offered. By adding an extra layer of security in addition to your password, such as a face scan or a code texted to your phone, you will be much less susceptible to hacking.
Don’t skip the updates
Don’t ignore updates to your devices and apps. Oftentimes, updates will address and fix security bugs, which helps protect your data. Enable automatic updates for an easier solution.
Report phishing attempts
Look out for unexpected attachments, typos or unfamiliar address in emails and text messages. A message that urgently requests personal information could be an attempt to trick you. In these scenarios, you should avoid clicking any links. This could lead to you downloading malware or giving your personal information to a scammer. Before you delete the message, be sure to report it so the scam doesn’t become widespread.
