A skimmer refers to a device disguised as a card reader or keypad which scammers use to steal your debit or credit card information. When installed on an ATM, skimmers can read and record your card’s number and PIN, which criminals can in turn use to create a duplicate card, giving them access to your funds.
Although FPCCFCU takes measures to ensure our ATMs are safe for members to use, you should be aware that crimes of this type have been documented in the Fort Wayne area. To help ensure your card doesn’t become compromised, we’ve compiled some tips to help you recognize and avoid skimmers.
- Check the profile of card readers and keypads. Skimmers are installed over these parts of the ATM. The photo above is what an FPCCFCU ATM looks like. With a skimmer installed, the card reader or the keypad will appear raised or bulkier.
- Look for other devices attached to the ATM. You may see additional devices hanging off the ATM, such as a camera pointed toward the keypad in an effort to record your PIN sequence.
- Jiggle the card reader and keypad. Check for any loose-fitting attachments.
- Check for adhesive residue. Skimmers can be convincing decoys, but any sign of tape or sticky residue may give them away.
