Fire Police City County FCU Now Offers Certified Financial Counseling

Fire Police City County Federal Credit Union (FPCC) is dedicated to providing personalized financial services, and prioritizing the unique needs and best interests of each member. "We’re always focused on member experience," said FPCC Loan Manager Bailey Fromm, highlighting the credit union's emphasis on delivering tailored solutions across a variety of services and programs.

In recent years, FPCC has expanded its financial literacy efforts, covering topics such as mortgage lending, homebuying, budgeting and retirement. The credit union has also focused on promoting adult financial education and participation, most recently with Wellspring Interfaith Social Services and Fort Wayne Parks & Recreation.

FPCC offers several specialized programs, including one for first-time auto buyers and another called Community Heroes, which targets healthcare workers, educators, and first responders —as well as other key members of the community - offering zero percent down on home loans.

Looking ahead to 2025, the credit union plans to enhance its focus on financial counseling and debt consolidation, services that are free to members.

FPCC is home to 16 certified financial counselors, available at all six of its locations. These counselors completed an intensive eight-week course and undergo recertification every three years. "Making an appointment is best so we can take a deeper dive into [your situation]," Kayla Markwell, Member Advocate Manager, advised. FPCC's loan officers are also trained in financial counseling, making financial wellness a comprehensive process.

The debt consolidation process, similar to a loan closing, typically takes less than 30 days and involves securing collateral. Counselors review credit reports and develop individualized financial wellness plans while identifying where and how they can save members money. "One of the biggest advantages is convenience. Your payments are basically [merged] into one," Markwell explained. Sticking to the plan can also result in an improved credit score as other debts are paid off.

However, there is often initial hesitation among members. "I think for a lot of people, they’re scared before they come to us or, out of fear, they don’t come at all. One of the biggest steps is just admitting that you need help," said Marketing Manager Tony Belton, emphasizing the supportive role FPCC aims to play in helping members overcome financial difficulties.
