Our History
The Credit Union was founded in 1933, in the middle of the Great
Depression, by 13 firemen at old Station 3, now the Fort Wayne Firefighter’s Museum. We later
served firemen and volunteers in counties adjacent to Allen County. In 1982 Fire Fighter’s
Credit Union merged with City-County Credit Union in order to serve city and county workers
and their families. In 1997 we merged with Fort Wayne Police
Department Federal Credit Union. Additional groups have joined as members and
continue to be added.
The main office building was built on Clinton
Street in 1978 to improve services and offer share drafts. A three-level
addition was completed in 1995, and allowed us to add drive-thru windows and ATM
services.
The office in the City-County Building was relocated to a more
central location in the building in 1984 to better serve members’ needs. An ATM
machine was installed in the northeast corner of the lobby in 1996 and in 2000
we enlarged this office to accommodate a full-time loan officer.
The
Police office was remodeled in 1997 and in 2002 at the Police Operation Headquarters. An ATM
machine, accessible to the public, was installed in the entrance in 1998.
In 2002 we also installed an ATM in the New Haven City
Hall Building.
In the fall of 2003, NCUA and the Board of Directors approved
a merger with REA Federal Credit Union in order to offer our services to their
membership. With the merger, the Credit Union gained an office located in the
REA Magnet Wire Ft. Wayne plant located on Pontiac St.
In January of
2005 we opened our 5th branch located at the Jefferson Pointe shopping mall
on Illinois Road. This branch features safe deposit boxes, an ATM machine and a
night
drop box.
Our annual meeting is held every April. All members
are invited to join us for dinner and the election of our Board of Directors.
Our Board of Directors reflects all our major employee groups, and includes
several city officials. Ed
Heidenreich, Chairman of the Board, has been active with credit unions since 1960 when he
was involved with founding Civil City Credit Union. This diversity is
one of our great strengths.
